Like many other buildings in Gustavia, the bell tower was seriously damaged by the cyclone of August 2, 1837, but was quickly restored.
The bell was used to call the faithful to religious service, previously warned by the garrison drummers.
During its restoration in 1931, the bell tower was fitted with a clock facing the city.
