All the information about the History of the island of Anguilla
In the Beginning ...
Although taunted by Christopher Columbus on his second expedition in 1493, he named it "Anguilla", probably in homage to its elongated shape, even though he never set foot on the island.
In fact, the very first people to settle in Anguilla were the English from Saint Kitts in the 17th century. Slavery was abolished in 1834.
The Anguillans, tired of being under the thumb of Saint Kitts, finally won their independence in 1980, after several attempts at separation.
However, it was not until April 01, 1982 that Anguilla obtained its status as a British Dependent Territory.
