The Little Egret

This wading bird is a member of the Ardeidae family, which includes herons, egrets, bitterns and related species. With its all-white plumage and yellow beak, the egret has long, thin, yellow legs. Very common in the Caribbean, it is often seen on the backs of oxen, which it deworms, hence its nickname "oxpecker".

Called "FouFou" in Creole, it's part of the Caribbean landscape. There are many species, and they feed mainly on nectar, but also on insects. Small, fast and with brightly colored plumage, it impresses with its speed and ability to fly backwards! You'll often see it in gardens, savoring the nectar from flowers with its long, curved beak.

This remarkable little passerine, about 10cm long, has the scientific name Coereba Flaveola. It's aptly named, as it's very fond of flower nectars, fruit juices, insects and sugar.
Put a little on a plate, and after a few minutes, ten or twenty sugar cubes will come and feast. And don't forget, when the plate is empty, they'll be heard...
